THE META COLLECTION
Cultural cross-pollination combined with steadfast virtuosity. The influence of Japanese lacquer techniques and West African sculpture and textiles on French Art Deco. How the applied arts of Meiji era Japan expanded and deepened the moment Modernism was introduced. Contemporary American art as an amalgam of international immigrants seeking The New. The META COLLECTION is made up of four hand plastered wallpaper patterns derived from cultural periods that continue to influence and inspire: French Art Deco, West African sculpture and textiles of the early twentieth century, The Japanese Meiji Period, and Contemporary Art.
Comprised of four distinct surfaces: Tessera, Aperion, Permia, and Permia-Iridi.
TESSERA
On a ground of tonal cross hatching, alternating recumbent and standing rectangles are ornamented with delicate metallic lines. Tessera is influenced by the lacquer screens of Eileen Gray and Jean Dunand, the stools of Legrain and Ewe and Aso Oke strip loom textiles.
APERION
Robust polygonal shapes embedded in or mounted on a rich plaster ground. These shapes are either deeply saturated withpigment or kept nearly silent, tone on tone. Aperion is inspired by the work of Richard Tuttle.
PERMIA
Permia has an intricate and dappled texture: compressed marble dust plaster is base to a speckled overlay, vibrating with delicate halos.
PERMIA-IRIDI
Handcut strips of Mother of Pearl are embedded within Permia to create Permia-Iridi.
